Flags for Fallen Vets, Inc., a nonprofit organization founded in 2012 with a mission to ensure that every veteran buried in a national cemetery receives the recognition and respect they deserve, particularly on Memorial Day. The organization's core activity is the placement of American flags at the graves of veterans in national cemeteries across the United States.

Founding and Mission

Flags for Fallen Vets was created by individuals enthusiastic about honoring the sacrifices made by military service members. Their goal was to create a movement that brought communities together to honor veterans through a simple yet powerful act—placing flags at their gravesites. The organization grew quickly, focusing on bringing awareness to the sacrifices of those who served while fostering a sense of community and gratitude.

Expansion and Activities

Initially, the organization's efforts were localized to a few national cemeteries. Over time, they expanded their scope to include more cemeteries across the United States, as the movement gained volunteers and support. Each year, hundreds of volunteers, including families, veterans, and civic groups, take part in events to place flags on Memorial Day and occasionally other significant holidays.

Since 2024, Flags for Fallen Vets gave way to the local cemeteries event coordinators to essentially take over all aspects of the event. This includes all volunteering information, fundraising, and buying of supplies needed to complete the delicate task of honoring all our fallen heroes. With the help of the Joint Veterans Support Committee, or JVSC, Florida National Cemetery, Flags for Florida's Fallen was born.

Community Involvement

The success of Flags for Florida's Fallen relies heavily on the involvement of volunteers and donors. The organization emphasizes community participation, with local volunteers organizing and executing the flag placement efforts. These events are designed to be both a tribute and an educational experience, reminding younger generations of the sacrifices made for their freedoms.

Impact and Legacy

Flags for Florida's Fallen has made a significant impact on how Memorial Day is seen at national cemeteries. By placing flags, the organization ensures that the memory of each veteran is honored and preserved. Their efforts have also inspired similar initiatives across the country, creating a broader culture of remembrance.

Challenges and Ongoing Efforts

Despite its success, Flags for Florida's Fallen faces challenges such as funding, coordination, and the growing number of veterans to honor. However, the organization's dedication and widespread community support have allowed it to thrive and continue its mission year after year.
